From the ancient pursuit of immortality through the concoction of External Elixirs (Waidan) to the later emphasis on Internal Alchemy (Neidan) focused on physical and mental refinement, Daoist aspirations for “eternal life” have always centered on the cultivation of “Essence, Energy, and Spirit” (Jing, Qi, Shen). This article traces the historical evolution from external to internal alchemical practices, revealing a traditional Chinese philosophy of life: the quest is not for an external “elixir of life,” but for the inward nurturing of one’s authentic existence.
